Sky: Half of UK’s 3D TVs signed up for Sky 3D
Sky has revealed that 70,000 people are now signed up for Sky 3D claiming that “thousands more” are signing up each week and half of the 3D televisions in the UK use the service.
Sky has expressed its delight at reaching the figure since the channel launched on 1 October, with the total reached in just under four months.
The service is free to those people on Sky’s top package, but you do, of course, need a 3D enabled television to watch it on.
“3D has got off to a great start with around 70,000 customers having signed up to the service in the first few months,” said Sky chief executive Jeremy Darroch.
“We are very happy with the progress of 3D to date and are really encouraged by the feedback we are getting from customers.”

3D TV from Sky and Virgin Media is here to stay
Although 3D TV services have only been available in the UK for a matter of months, the technology is moving on apace.
Readers may have spotted a piece from Broadband TV News earlier this week that reported Sky and Virgin Media – the two broadcasters that offer content in three glorious dimensions – are beavering away on creating 3D versions of their electronic programme guides.
While this may not sound like the most thrilling of developments, it is another example of the digital TV giants’ commitment to working on their 3D propositions.

Sky 3D improving all the time
Sky is always adding new content to its recently launched 3D channel, with this week seeing the pay TV giant unveiling plans to screen the first-ever live broadcast of an opera in three dimensions.
The English National Opera’s production of Lucrezia Borgia, directed by Mike Figgis of Leaving Las Vegas fame, will be yet another string to the bow of the innovative digital TV station when it airs on February 23rd.
Any fears that the channel would be exclusively the preserve of Premier League football and golf tournaments have been put to bed, with Sky ensuring it offers something for everyone.
Movies such as Toy Story 3 and Bolt 3D have been screened, with the likes of Alice in Wonderland and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs to come later this month.

Sky and LG to promote benefits of 3D TV
Sky and LG have agreed a deal that will see the broadcaster endorsing the manufacturer’s 3D televisions.
The partnership comes ahead of the premiere of Sky’s new 3D TV channel at the start of October 2010, which will screen live coverage of the Ryder Cup over its launch weekend.
Hollywood blockbusters, such as Alice in Wonderland, Bolt and Monsters vs Aliens, will also be shown on Sky 3D.
Under the terms of the deal, the two companies will link up to raise awareness of 3D to consumers through a series of demonstrations and lessons.
Director of product management at Sky Hilary Perchard said the firm is “delighted” to have entered into the agreement with LG, adding that the promotional campaign will continue following the launch of the new channel.
“As the only manufacturer so far committed to both active and passive TVs, we believe LG has the breadth of product to offer a 3D TV experience for all Sky customers,” she added.

Insight — Is 3DTV Such A Big Thing?
3DTV Isn’t New
All of the content industry is currently talking about the arrival of 3DTV. However, three-dimensional video is nothing new.
The first 3D cinema productions made their appearance as early as the 1920s. The 1950s represented the golden age of 3D, with more than one hundred films produced using anaglyph technology (color coding). Following a drop-off in the 60s and 70s, 2D anaglyph made a comeback in the 1980s. 3D returned at the end of the 2000s — this time in digital format.
Thanks to digitization, movie theaters are already becoming “3D-ready.” Now households are expected to get equipped with 3D screens (TV sets, computer monitors).
There are two types of screens that can read native 3D images:
* stereoscopic screens, which require polarized or active glasses, depending on the technology used
* autostereoscopic screens, which allow 3D viewing without special glasses
