Consumers say in-store 3D experience more amazing than in cinemas

Consumers say they are being blown away by in-store 3D TV demos, more so than when they go to the cinema to view a film in 3D.

“Since high-quality digital 3D has been available in the theaters for a few years now, consumers have come to expect impressive effects that are worth the price of admission,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for The NPD Group, “However, 3D TVs are relatively new and those viewing a demo don’t have to pay for the privilege, resulting in lower expectations that the sets are often exceeding.”

It seems like great news for 3D TV manufacturers and consumer electronics retail stores however, that ‘wow’ feeling consumers are experiencing doesn’t necessarily translate to in-store sales.

An additional study conducted by the International 3D Society and published on Home Media Magazine on October 27 reveals that almost 60 percent of all adults in the US are yet to watch a 3D film.

Most adults in the US (54 percent) expect 3D TV to be better than its HDTV counterpart, however, those potential 3D TV customers appear to be waiting for price drops and additional 3D content to arrive before jumping on the trend.

3D TV Sales off to a Slow Start in Japan

Sales of 3D televisions in Japan got off to a slow start this year accounting for roughly one in 25 big-screen sets sold during the six months from April, according to reports from TV makers.

In total, 131,000 3D-capable televisions were sold in Japan during the period, said the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA). The group collected data from Sony, Panasonic, Sharp and Toshiba to come up with the number.

Those sales accounted for 1.3 percent of all televisions sold during the six-month period.

The market share of 3D televisions was higher when compared against just televisions with a similar screen size. In the market for 37-inch and above models, 3D televisions accounted for just over 4 percent of the market.

The figures include so-called 3D-ready models that are capable of showing 3D images but don’t come with the required glasses.

3D TVs high on Christmas list

WITH Christmas less than two months away franchisee Rob Purcell of Harvey Norman Toowoomba expects 3D TVs to be the must-have Christmas item as studios prepare to release a slew of new 3D content.

Since their release in April this year, Mr Purcell now believes that 3D TVs account for more than 30 per cent of all TV sales.

“They are an extremely popular item and it has certainly rejuvenated the TV market,” Mr Purcell said.

However with the price dropping dramatically and major sporting events trialling the new technology, Mr Purcell believes the TVs will fly off the shelves.

Movies main attraction for 3D TV but demand still low Read more: Movies main attraction for 3D TV but demand still low

The first instalment of the 3D 360° monitor has revealed that even though 3D TV sales will rocket from under 5,000 units at the end of 2010 to nearly 40,000 by the end of 2014, cost of equipment, including glasses, is still a gating factor.

The 3D 360° Monitor, developed by The NPD Group, paints a fairly positive picture for 3D development but shows that the fundamental gap that 3D faces is the one between the appeal of the experience and the acquisition of products to create it. More than half of those intending to purchase a 3D product say that 3D enhances the viewing experience, and 42% agree with the statement that 3D is the future. Yet even though 42% of consumers surveyed were at least somewhat interested in watching 3D movies at home, but only 11% intend to purchase a 3D television.

The main objections from consumers not currently interested in purchasing a 3D TV include cost and the need to wear glasses, but there are also concerns about the relatively short amount of time the technology has been available in the consumer market, and whether or not the technical issues have been addressed.

3D TV to be mainstream by 2014

According to a new report, 3D TV sales could rise to over 90 million sets by 2014. DisplaySearch’s Quarterly TV Design and Features Report says that though 3D TV is now readily available at retail, the uptake among consumers has been limited by high prices and lack of content. However, the report does forecast that there will be tremendous growth in 3D TV shipments over the next few years: 3.2 million 3D TVs will be shipped in 2010, with growth to over 90 million in 2014.

Sales will be driven by falling prices, increased content availability, and improvements in technology and will lead to 3D growing from 2% of all flat panel TVs shipped in 2010 to 41% in 2014. “While TV manufacturers have bold plans and a lot of new products, consumers remain cautious,” said Paul Gray, director of TV Electronics Research. “Consumers have been told that 3D TV is the future, but there still remains a huge price jump and little 3D content to watch.”

3D A Big Flop For Retailers & Consumers

A ChannelNews research study of consumer electronics retailers reveals that most retailers 87% believe that 3D TV marketing has not worked in Australia. Several claimed that the initial hype drove consumers into stores but “very few” consumers made a TV purchase because of perceived problems with 3D glasses.

They also claimed that the recent FIFA World Cup was “a total failure” for consumer electronics retailers and that the idea of using “big sporting events” to drive TV sales was “now over”.

Several retailers said that content and IPTV services were set to drive sales in the last quarter along with demand for a second or third TV.

Retailers believe that there several obstacles in the way of 3D TVs, the biggest being the need to use 3D glasses.
