3D TV Prices Dropping

According to television manufacturers, 3D TV prices should fall in 2011, perhaps enticing more of the viewing public to embrace a new way of watching the tube.

The new technology is increasingly common on higher-end HDTVs, but Nielsen recently found a paltry two percent of Americans own a 3D set.

3D TV is a vast improvement from yesterday’s flimsy red and blue-tinted glasses.

“It’s actually interacting with you, coming at you more than it used to be,” said Best Buy’s Dave Dickerson.

Dickerson said most customers are looking for a good TV, not specifically a 3D TV. As far as prices are concerned, he said $1,500 to $2,000 is a normal jumping off point for a 3D TV.

Should I Buy A 3D TV Now, Or Can I Wait till The Prices Come Down?

Therefore should we actually all be ditching our old ( or in truth actually pretty new ) sets in favor of a new 3D television? If we do, what will we watch? And will we need special specs to do so? Fear not we’ve got the answers.

How does 3D television work?

“It displays 2 pictures on the screen at once, with the footage moving further apart or closer together to make pictures appear that they have depth,” claims Christian Brown, senior class executive at Sony. How the image is delivered relies on the 3D system being used how many cameras split the image during filming and where in the process they are brought back together. “But they eventually work on the same grounds the two pictures together trick your cortex into believing the image is three dimensional.”

3D TV Sales off to a Slow Start in Japan

Sales of 3D televisions in Japan got off to a slow start this year accounting for roughly one in 25 big-screen sets sold during the six months from April, according to reports from TV makers.

In total, 131,000 3D-capable televisions were sold in Japan during the period, said the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA). The group collected data from Sony, Panasonic, Sharp and Toshiba to come up with the number.

Those sales accounted for 1.3 percent of all televisions sold during the six-month period.

The market share of 3D televisions was higher when compared against just televisions with a similar screen size. In the market for 37-inch and above models, 3D televisions accounted for just over 4 percent of the market.

The figures include so-called 3D-ready models that are capable of showing 3D images but don’t come with the required glasses.

Much-hyped 3D TV too expensive, almost useless for Ukrainian viewers

This year is a revolutionary one for the TV industry. It’s when the first 3D TV sets appeared on the shelves and the idea of watching movies in 3D glasses at home became popular.

Ukrainian gadget lovers also have an opportunity to taste this newly born technology. The 3D TV sets are available in Ukraine, but pricey.

Let’s examine what a 3D TV offers and whether it’s worth the asking price.

The 3D revolution didn’t come out of the blue. 3D movie theaters have been gaining popularity for years, although they showed mostly science-fiction movies.

The real breakthrough was Avatar by James Cameron, a sci-fi blockbuster that rocketed to the top of the box office with its unbelievable $2.7 billion in revenue. More than half of it came from 3D movie theaters around the world.

Since then almost every new huge film produced in Hollywood is made in 3D, and even some old movies will be re-edited in order to catch up with the new trend. For instance, George Lukas promised to do this with his evergreen Star Wars series.

Seeing Things: 3D Glasses Sales Lag 3D TV Expectations

The slow sales of 3D TVs is not the result of the weak numbers of TV sets shipped to retailers; rather, it’s from the number of 3D glasses in the market.

For example, sales in Western Europe of 3D glasses are poor in terms of buying multiple sets of glasses per household, according to TV set/media forecaster DisplaySearch. In a new report, the researcher found that most countries fail to achieve a one-to-one, glasses to TV set ratio.

“This is particularly disappointing,” stated Paul Gray, director of TV electronics research at DisplaySearch. “A healthy level would be closer to two pairs of 3D glasses per TV, so it’s clear that these sets, at best, are being chosen for future-proofing.”

3D TV to be mainstream by 2014

According to a new report, 3D TV sales could rise to over 90 million sets by 2014. DisplaySearch’s Quarterly TV Design and Features Report says that though 3D TV is now readily available at retail, the uptake among consumers has been limited by high prices and lack of content. However, the report does forecast that there will be tremendous growth in 3D TV shipments over the next few years: 3.2 million 3D TVs will be shipped in 2010, with growth to over 90 million in 2014.

Sales will be driven by falling prices, increased content availability, and improvements in technology and will lead to 3D growing from 2% of all flat panel TVs shipped in 2010 to 41% in 2014. “While TV manufacturers have bold plans and a lot of new products, consumers remain cautious,” said Paul Gray, director of TV Electronics Research. “Consumers have been told that 3D TV is the future, but there still remains a huge price jump and little 3D content to watch.”
