3D TV: Can you see it yet?

‘Early adopters’ – the geeks who have every gadget first – always pay the price. That has never been truer than with 3D. The first 3D TVs launched in the UK last spring, with an average price of £2,000.

The 2011 ranges are getting nearer the £1,000 mark and include a lot more choices of screen size. Neverthless, 3D is still very much a premium option – analysts predict it’ll take until 2014 for even 30 per cent of TV sales to be of 3D sets.

Are 3D TV’s A Waste Of Money?

Of course it is worth noting that while the first batch of consumer 3D TVs all required active shutter glasses, manufacturers such as LG are working to bring the passive style screens which replicate the cinema experience to the mainstream market.

Even when this occurs there is still a downside, as the cheap plastic glasses drain the colour and brightness from the onscreen image by virtue of their design and this can be a real problem, particularly when you are watching animated movies that are supposed to be fun and bursting with every hue under the sun. HD TV suffers from none of these issues.

Glasses-free 3D display technology is on its way, but it is between five and ten years away from being good enough to replace an HD TV-size device, so do not hold your breath. And will your current HD TV still be working just as well in that time frame? Almost certainly.

HDTV Expert – 3D: Americans Still Aren’t Buying It

Nielsen’s latest report on American media device ownership and use is now available here, and it contains plenty of useful tidbits of market information.

For example, the average American watches 35.6 hours of television a week, which is almost as much time as they spend at a full-time job. As for our constant obsession with ‘too much TV viewing’ for kids, we’re looking at the wrong age group: Children 2-11 watch about 26 hours a week, while adults over 65 are hooked to the boob tube almost 50 hours a week.

Exclusive deals make 3D TV audience even smaller

Just having the latest and greatest 3D-enabled TV won’t guarantee you a virtual court-side seat this weekend when CBS Sports broadcasts the U.S. Open tennis tournament in 3D. You’ll also have to subscribe to DirecTV’s satellite TV service.

Avid sports fans can now feel like they’re part of the action in their own living rooms thanks to 3D TV broadcasts of live sporting events, such as the U.S. Open. But exclusive distribution deals limit who gets to see what.

Readers say “No thanks!” to 3D TV

Most of the readers who shared their opinions on 3D TV aren’t rushing out to buy a set anytime soon, if ever. One of the biggest objections was …drum roll, please…the glasses.

“The dealbreaker for me is the stupid glasses. Too much of a hassle,” said Mike H. Another reader, SparkyGump, chimed in, “I’ll go 3D when you don’t need special glasses to view it.” Other readers called the glasses “ridiculous,” “prosthetic devices,” and “geek of the week.”
