3D Motion Capture Recreates Yankees Closer

Thanks to advanced motion capture technology, there may be a new way for baseball scouts to study players, the government to track terrorists and marketers to better analyze consumer behaviors.

Motion capture technology analyzes human movements through animated 3-D images. As head of New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences’ Movement Laboratory, Chris Bregler, an associate professor, lives and breathes it every day.

No 3D TV? Watch the final World Cup matches in 3D movie theaters

Though Hollywood studios and consumer electronics manufacturers are pushing 3D home entertainment as the next big thing, opportunities to catch live events on 3D TVs are still very rare for people who haven’t already taken the plunge and bought a new 3D-capable TV.

And even for those people, it requires a DirecTV, Comcast Xfinity, or AT&T U-Verse subscription with supportive 3D programming, and there have still only been a handful of events broadcast in 3D.

But the World Cup is a serious affair for many, and it presents an opportunity to open eyes to the possibilities of live TV in three dimensions. So in 30 locations across the U.S. and Canada, soccer fans eager to catch the main World Cup matches in 3D will be able to see them in movie theaters on 50-foot high screens.

10 changes to the way sport is shot for 3D TV

It may have missed out on the World Cup but Sky has big plans for showing sport in 3D. The satellite king will be showing live football, rugby and cricket amongst others on its 3D channel this year.

January witnessed the first live broadcasts of Premier League football matches in 3D for punters at pubs across the UK. Recently Sky launched its 3D channel, currently broadcasting a showreel of 3D highlights plus the occasional live event such as the first cricket match to be shown in 3D on 8 July between England and Bangladesh.

For living room viewers the 3D channel (no 217 on the EPG) is currently available free to top tier subscribers. You do, of course, need a new generation 3DTV, but existing Sky+ HD boxes can be upgraded via a software update.

Here’s how Sky has changed the way it shoots sport for 3D viewing.

3D World Cup commercials in production

Stereo production companies Vision3 and Compendium are producing seven advertising spots in 3D to be aired at cinemas or on the Sky 3D channel during the World Cup. Vision3 is also supervising the 3D shoot for Sky 3D’s Sir David Attenborough documentary ‘Flying Monsters 3D’, writes Adrian Pennington.

The two UK-based outfits announced a joint venture partnership, Vision3@Compendium, at the beginning of the month.

According to Vision3 senior producer Adam May: “We are fielding a huge amount of enquiries from agencies and brands who see a unique opportunity to present 3D ads around World Cup programming. We offer a 3D layer of expertise and technology from production to post across features, TV and commercials.”

ESPN used Harlem Globetrotters game to test 3D basketball production

Not all the preparation for ESPN’s 3D network is going on at the Innovation Lab, VP of Communications Mike Soltys recently spoke with Sports Media Watch during ESPN the Weekend at Disney and mentioned other tests under way to make sure things get off on the right foot. A recent Globetrotters game in Orlando that aired on ESPN2 served as a test bed for 3D, with production done out of the same truck as the regular broadcast and 3D cameras mounted along with their standard broadcast counterparts. NBA games will be among the “minimum” 85 3D events ESPN airs on the network over the first year and we’re pretty sure they were more interested in finding out how to best capture Dwight Howard than Flight Time Lang.

As we learned from Sky’s recent demo, camera angle is a major part of the 3D soccer experience and to get that right there’s a soccer field next to the aforementioned Innovation Lab to work out those details before this summer’s World Cup debut. Check the full interview for a few more details plus notes on whether it plans on reacquiring rights to air NHL games and other major and minor recent controversies — we’ll stick to the 3D.

2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Tournament matches to be broadcast in 3D

I can’t imagine why sports fans would want to watch important games in gimmicky 3D, but SKY Perfect JSAT and Sony corporations think there’s a market for it. Beginning June 19, a number of matches will be broadcast in 3D, including the Japan-Netherlands match and the tournament final.

SKY Perfect JSAT is planning to offer live HD broadcasts of all 64 FIFA World Cup South Africa Tournament matches through its multi-channel pay TV service, and 25 of those matches will be broadcast in 3D.

3D Baseball coming soon

The future just got a little closer. (Well, it always does, at the same pace, but you know what I mean.) 3-D Baseball:

DirecTV and the Yes Network are planning to televise what they say will be the first Major League Baseball games in 3-D.

The New York Yankees vs. Seattle Mariners games on July 10 and 11 will be aired in New York, Connecticut, Washington, Oregon, Alaska and parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Montana and Idaho.

Here’s the caveat: “Only viewers with 3-D sets will be able to watch in 3-D.” The fact that they feel compelled to note that means we’re in for another round of people who don’t grasp the technology; just as people bought high-def TV and wondered why normal TV looked all wide and smeary, people will wonder why 3D looks so flat. For those who have the proper set, though, this should be cool – especially if someone fires a line drive right into the camera. It’s like you’re right there! Without suffering a concussion or nose-bone fragments in your brain.
