3D Success Still Coming Into Focus

As we move further past the one-year anniversary of the first 3D TV sets launched in the U.S., it’s clear 3D hasn’t leapt to the forefront of consumer technology market. But it hasn’t fallen completely into the background, either.

The recent announcement by Nintendo that it would dramatically cut the price of the Nintendo 3DS could be seen as another tough break for 3D products. In fact, Nintendo’s newest handheld gaming system overcame two of the most commonly cited objections for 3D–high prices for hardware and the need to wear glasses. Read more…

HTC EVO 3D (Sprint)

Awesome yet baffling, breathtaking but frustrating, the HTC EVO 3D ($199 with contract) is a super-cool, super-powerful phone that requires some patience. As the first glasses-free 3D phone in the United States, the EVO 3D was a conversation starter everywhere I went with it. I’m going to treasure the 3D photos I took of my daughter. but Internet connection problems, bits of missing hardware and software, and a very narrow 3D viewing angle makes this a phone for adventurous early adopters rather than the masses.

Physical Design
The HTC EVO 3D is a big phone, slightly bigger than even the original HTC EVO 4G ($149, 4 stars) at 5.0 by 2.5 by .45 inches (HWD) and 5.9 ounces. The textured back is comfortable in the hand. A bump on the back shows the dual 5-megapixel cameras for recording 3D images and video. The phone’s front is indistingushable from many other black slab phones, when it’s off; it’s a 4.3-inch screen with four silkscreened Android touch buttons below it. Read more…

Sprint Will Offer 3D Phone, Tablet from Booming HTC

Sprint Nextel is poised to release a new glasses-free 3D smartphone and a web tablet running Android manufactured by Taiwan-based HTC, the wireless carrier said Monday. Sprint’s announcement is merely the latest sign that HTC has become one of the world’s top performers in the smartphone market, analysts said.

HTC shipped 9.3 million mobile communications devices in the first quarter — up 175.7 percent from one year earlier, noted Roberta Cozza, a principal analyst at Gartner.

“They are becoming an important vendor for the carriers,” Cozza said in a telephone interview Monday. “HTC has managed more than anyone else to create offerings that really stand out (because of extra software) they put on top of Android.” Read more…

iPhone 3D Camera With Panorama4D: Face Detection

Per Phones Review in the UK:

The big technology of today is looking to be 3D, with numerous smartphone makers working on pushing out 3D enabled devices, something Apple hasn’t yet done with their iOS gear. But that doesn’t mean iOS users have to miss out on that 3D action.

The Panaorama4D iOS app can apparently turn your iPhone into a 3D camera and works with the iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 4G and the Apple iPad 2 and is the first iOS app that enables the user to shoot 3D photos.

The Panaroma4D iOS app offers such things as Gyroscope 4D mode that delivers a 4D effect, face detection, the ability to share in 3D on Twitter and Facebook, and an Anaglyph 3D mode whereby the user puts on anaglyphs glasses to view a 3 dimensional show. Read more…

It can be used to play 3D games as well as films, TV shows and sporting events.

It also has a twin-lens 3D camera, so users can take their own 3D pictures and movies and play them back on a 3D TV.

The Korean firm hopes it can steal a march on its rivals by adding 3D capabilities to a phone.

Sharp shows glasses-free 3D

Toshiba showed us this week what 3D without glasses can look like on a laptop and a TV. But what about screens sized for mobile devices?

That’s where Sharp comes in, and with a fairly impressive demo. The Japanese consumer electronics maker has two glasses-free 3D displays here at Ceatec measuring 3.8-inches and 10.6. inches. Both are still prototypes–unlike Toshiba’s 12 and 20-inch TVs scheduled to hit stores in Japan by the end of the year–but work remarkably well.
