Global Spending On Blu-ray 3D Booming Thanks To PlayStation 3
One of the reasons 3D TV sales got off to a slow start was because of lack of content. Those gamers and early adopters who picked up a new 3D TV to try out their PlayStation 3 stereoscopic upgrade had very little to watch on it, or play. But with Hollywood now starting to release some of its biggest 3D movies on Blu-ray 3D, IHS Screen Digest research predicts that Blu-ray 3D (BD3D) sales will explode in the U.S. and major European economies this year.
“We certainly view gaming and video content as equal drivers of the 3D experience, and we know that the PlayStation 3 is the device that most people are choosing as their 3D player for the living room because it plays such a variety of 3D content,” said John Koller, Director of Hardware Marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America. In Depth: The truth about 3D Blu-ray
Director James Cameron was bang on the money when he declared his revolutionary sci-fi epic Avatar would be a game-changer.
Moviegoers queued round the block to get a glimpse of Pandora in glorious 3D, propelling the movie to a record-pulverising box-office take of almost $3 billion.
The reason, Cameron reckons, was quite simple: “Where they had a choice the audience was selecting the best possible way to see the movie, and they saw 3D as the premium viewing experience.”
Producer Jon Landau claimed that the movie had “restored belief that cinema can be a magical experience,” and other studios were falling over themselves to capture some three-dimensional lightning in a bottle.

Fox to mine “Avatar” DVD release three times
![]()
Twentieth Century Fox on Tuesday set Earth Day, April 22, for the DVD and Blu-ray release of “Avatar”. But fans will have to wait until November for another disc with all the usual extras, and even longer for a 3-D version.
Fox said it had chosen Earth Day as “Avatar’s” U.S. and Canada home video release, because the film’s theme matches the day’s goal of environmental awareness.

What Qualifies as 3D-enabled Blu-ray Disc Player?
According to information available so far (March 2010), 3D can be implemented in Blu-ray two ways:
1. A new breed of Blu-ray Disc players are designed from the ground-up to comply fully with the recently adopted 3D for Blu-ray Disc standard. This means that the Blu-ray Disc player must be able to deliver two simultaneous 1080p signals (one 1080p signal for each eye). In order to do this, the Blu-ray Disc play must employ a new version of HDMI 1.4 that is able to transfer this signal. Of course, on the receiving end, it is required that the TV must be able to receive and process this signal, which will also require that the TV also be HDMI ver1.4 equipped.
